Makeup for a photo shoot is a slightly different craft than makeup for a night out. The camera sees things the mirror does not, and knowing that changes how a look gets built.
Whether you’re heading into an engagement session, a branding shoot, or an editorial day in the mountains, here is what we want you to know.
Photographs flatten, so definition has to be intentional
A camera compresses depth. Contour, blush, and brow definition that look perfect in person can read as almost nothing in a photograph, especially in bright mountain light. We build a little more structure than you might expect, placed carefully so it still looks like your face rather than a technique.
This is also why professional makeup tends to photograph better than everyday makeup even when the finished look is soft and natural.
Skin prep is the whole foundation
Almost everything a camera notices about makeup is actually about skin. Texture, dryness, and flaking will show. So the week before your session matters more than the hour before.
Drink more water than usual. Keep your routine consistent and skip anything new or aggressive. If you want a facial, schedule it at least two weeks out. Exfoliate gently a few days before, not the night before.
Lighting changes everything, and location light changes it twice
Golden hour in Telluride is beautiful and very warm. Midday alpine sun is bright and unforgiving. Indoor editorial light is something else entirely. We adjust base coverage, luminosity, and finish based on where you’ll actually be standing and what time your photographer has planned.
If you know your shoot locations, tell us. It genuinely changes the products we choose.
What to bring with you
Bring your lip color for touch-ups, blotting papers, and any jewelry you’re planning to wear so we can see how the look sits with it. Wear a button-down or something that doesn’t pull over your head. Have your outfits with you so we can coordinate color and intensity.
On-Location Glam brings the session to you
Our On-Location Glam service is a 90-minute professional application delivered wherever you’re getting ready, whether that’s a hotel in Mountain Village, a rental home, or a studio. It’s designed for engagement sessions, editorial work, special events, and celebrations where you want to look polished and camera-ready without adding a drive to your morning.
Every application is personalized, and the finish is built for the way you’ll actually be photographed.
If you have a session coming up in Telluride or anywhere we travel, reach out here and tell us about it.
